We want to contribute to a more friendly atmosphere towards refugees in Bremen by the "Welcome to the St. Nicholas day". This activity was performed for the first time in December 2013.
On the one hand, we prepare a little surprise for residents in transitional residences. On the other hand, we enable long term citizens of Bremen of all ages to get in touch with the transitional residences and their inhabitants through the 'Visiting Teams'. Such nondescript encounters often have a catalyst effect and change the perception of everyone involved to the positive. This can also trigger a longer-term commitment.
This Welcom-Initiative was started by Zia Hüttinger, founder of the Bremen soup Angels and Jens Stangenberg in the framework of the network Serve the City Bremen.
"We want to show kindness by deeds. Little occasions help to overcome social barriers and reduce fear of contact." Stangenberg explains about the idea.
"A language that everyone understands is to give away candy," mentions Hüttinger. "This way we can welcome people in Bremen who do not yet understand German."
